Correction: Information provided by the Des Moines Police Department included the incorrect hometown for Bryton Tichy. He was from Iowa Falls.
A motorcyclist involved in an early Saturday morning crash in Des Moines has died of his injuries, according to the Des Moines Police Department.
Police officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to 2nd Avenue and Laurel Street around 3:29 a.m. Aug. 6 to investigate a report of a motorcycle crash, Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a news release.
First responders arrived to find the motorcycle operator, Bryton Tichy, 26, of Iowa Falls unconscious and critically injured. Medics transported Tichy to MercyOne Des Moines, where he remained hospitalized until he died Wednesday night.
According to the news release, witness statements indicate that the motorcycle was traveling southbound on 2nd Avenue at a high rate of speed. As it entered the curve near Laurel Street, the motorcycle slid into the east curb.
"The significant contributing factors to this case appear to be excessive speed and failure to maintain control," Parizek said in the news release.
The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating this incident.
This is the 12th traffic-related fatality in Des Moines, and the fifth involving a motorcycle, of 2022.
Through Aug. 11, 198 people have died in traffic crashes in Iowa this year, an increase of 11 people from the same period last year, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation, which reports that more than 350 people died in traffic crashes in Iowa last year.
