Sheriff's deputy strikes 8-year-old riding a bicycle in Iowa town

An 8-year-old child on a bicycle was struck by a pickup and seriously injured in Glidden Saturday, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a State Patrol crash report. The child rode into Colorado Street in front of the Chevy Silverado, just south of Sixth Street, the report said. The child was airlifted to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.

The report identifies the driver as Thomas Fransen, 63, who is a Carroll County sheriff's deputy. He was not injured.
